The “MAsaktinCH” project is the second phase of an initiative focusing on freedom of expression in Morocco, supported by the Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Support of Human Rights Defenders. The initiative was launched by the association Pionniers du Changement pour le Développement et la Culture, starting in December 2018 and ending in December 2019 over a 12-month period.
The expression “MAsaktinCH” in Moroccan dialect (Darija) reveals a person’s discontent, expressing the rage to speak out loud and express oneself without fear. This could suggest a bold and forthright approach to the issues surrounding freedom of expression.
The project targeted two main groups. Firstly, it had prioritized fifteen young participants to benefit from training workshops in three specific towns, namely Oujda, Jerada and Taourirt. These workshops were set up to reinforce skills and awareness
Target:
Young people, elected representatives, students, journalists…
General objective:
This project aims to consolidate the culture of participation of young people in the management of local public affairs by developing their capacities in the field of elaboration and evaluation of territorial public policies: Oujda, Jerada and Taourirt
On the other hand, the project also had an indirect impact on 150 young men and women, actively elected citizens and politicians in the towns mentioned. This suggested a holistic approach, involving the training of potential leaders who, in turn, could positively influence their communities in favor of freedom of expression.
It was likely that the project used participatory and inclusive methods to encourage dialogue and engagement within these communities. Ultimately, the aim had been to promote an environment where human rights, particularly freedom of expression, were respected and actively defended. The approach of training workshops and the involvement of the younger generation suggested a desire to create lasting change in Moroccan society in favor of freedom of expression.
